Late at night, Lộc and his friend Sắc ride a scooter along a dark countryside path. They lose control and crash. Lộc's mother (Bà Sáu) witnesses the whole incident.

Inside the bamboo home, Lộc is made to lie face down across the bed while his mother disciplines him across the butt using a thin wooden switch. Lộc weeps and pleads for mercy. Bà Sáu demands to know what lessons she taught him. He recites them: stay away from Sắc, no gambling, and no drinking. She also scolds him for mimicking a Northern dialect instead of speaking their native Southern tongue.

Lộc claims he was just practicing for future travel up North.

The son also confesses to betting on cockfights. Angry at the gambling, she resumes caning him. He reflexively reaches back to protect himself, and she warns him to move his hand away so he doesn't get injured.

Hoping to placate her anger, Lộc pulls out a thick wallet full of cash.

Stunned, Bà Sáu demands to know where the money came from. Lộc confesses that he secretly took 5 million VND from her wardrobe to gamble, won 3 million, bringing the total to 8 million VND. Shocked by the theft from her private savings, she confronts him further. Lộc then drops the final blow: the scooter repair from the crash will cost 10 million VND. Doing the math, she points out that they have suffered a net loss of 7 million VND.

Lộc tries to cheer her up with the traditional saying, "better to lose wealth than a life". This only enrages her more. She orders him back down on the bed and delivers a firm, final round of spanking for his gambling, lies, and costly mistakes as the scene fades out.
