Number 10, Season 1., Episode 7. Bloodline

This is from the TV Mini Series called Number 10, Season 1., Episode 7. Bloodline (United Kingdom, Canada 1983)

Hiley Addington (the doctor's son, Winchester schoolboy): played by Duncan Royce, teen m/m teen, William Pitt the Younger as a Boy: played by Daniel Matthews (adult William played by Jeremy Brett), a few severe strokes of a rod, position of bent over a chair back, in front of witnesses, in a stable, tears.

Later, after the caning, the caned boy William walks around a hard wooden chair, but because of his sore bottom, he decides not to sit on it.

This rod caning was ordered by William Pitt the Elder, 1st Earl of Chatham (his father): played by Alfred Burke.

Other characters involved are: Dr. Anthony Addington (the family physician): played by David Neal.

Hester Pitt, Countess of Chatham / Lady Chatham (William's mother): played by Elaine Wells.

The punishment was unearned. Lord Chatham explicitly tells young William: “It will be the harder for you since you have done nothing to deserve it.”

William was a frail, sickly boy who was homeschooled rather than sent away to an English public school like Winchester College. Chatham believed a boy destined to lead Great Britain must not be shielded from any reality, including institutional corporal punishment.

The flogging was designed as an ordeal of endurance. Chatham wanted William to endure pain without displaying any weakness, emotion, or movement: “I shall be watching your face, and I do not wish to see so much as a tremor pass across it.”

In the stable, Dr. Addington strenuously protests against submitting William to such ordeal, arguing that the boy's constitution is dangerously delicate. Chatham dismisses his medical concerns, claiming that port wine has made William strong as a young lion, and insists that “one taste of barbarity will inform him, but not damage him.”

At first, Hiley strikes him lightly, which is why the lord Chatham commands Hiley to strike with full force.
