Mr. Bá (Ông Bá) is a strict, reputation-conscious father and the local village head.

Uyên is his adult daughter, who works as a local school teacher.

Uyên told her daddy that she was traveling to attend a two-day provincial teacher excellence competition. However, Mr. Bá accidentally ran into the school principal, who revealed that no such event was taking place and that Uyên had merely taken personal leave. When Uyên returns and continues lying about winning 2nd prize, her father catches her in the lie. Assuming that an overnight trip with friends involved inappropriate relations with young men, he punishes her for dishonoring the family and risking village gossip.

Uyên walks into the courtyard and greets her dad. Asked where she has been, she claims she won second prize at the teaching contest. Mr. Bá furiously exposes her deception, noting that he already spoke with the principal. Under pressure, she admits she went on an outing with Mận, leading her father to accuse her of running off with men.

Her father orders her onto her knees. Uyên kneels down and tries to defend herself, asserting she committed no moral transgression. Enraged and worried she might follow in the footsteps of her rebellious sister Đào, Mr. Bá grabs a handheld woven fan and strikes her several times.

Their neighbor Khoa hears the commotion, rushes in, and grabs Mr. Bá’s arms to stop the beating. The father turns his anger on Khoa, accusing him of spending the night with Uyên and attempting to hit him as well. Both young people swear nothing inappropriate occurred. The father orders them to keep the entire matter strictly silent to prevent rumors and orders Khoa off the property.

After Khoa steps away, Uyên stands up to her father, pointing out that she is an adult and a teacher, and begs him never to hit her again. He yells at her to go inside, and she runs into the house.
