Brother Rat

The scene is from the movie called Brother Rat (USA 1938) Wayne Morris as Cadet Billy Randolph, Ronald Reagan as Cadet Dan Crawford, Eddie Albert as Cadet Bing Edwards MMM/M William Tracy as teen Cadet Misto Bottom. The first two cadets each deliver a single lash with a broom on his ass. The third cadet, Bing Edwards, spares him the lash, so the strike remains merely suggested. Both swats are delivered while bent over a table and are given in a playful spirit. The hits gets the first-year cadet (freshman), Misto Bottom.

After both blows, Cadet Misto Bottom rubs his stinging butt with his hand.

This is a traditional, humorous initiation ritual at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) depicted in the film. Throughout the year, freshmen ("rats") are subjected to strict upperclassman discipline, forced to say "Sir" and "Mister," and obey orders.

Near commencement graduation, the freshmen are initiated and recognized as upperclassmen. The playful swat with a broom serves as the final step of initiation, immediately followed by the upperclassmen offering their hand and inviting the cadet to address them by their first name transitioning to informal, peer status.
