雀骨 aka Key to the Phoenix Heart, Episode 11.

Originally, Prince Qi (Li Mao) was to be punished for negligence and failure to supervise his sister—specifically, receiving thirty strokes with a paddle for inadequate supervision.

The county Mistress Pingning / Princess Li Lejun is the younger sister of the Prince Qi. The Empress Dowager vindictively decreed that Lejun must take the 30 blows on her brother's behalf.

Northern Qin’s Eagle King demanded a diplomatic marriage (heqin) with Li Lejun as a prerequisite for peace. Both Prince Qi and Li Lejun opposed this alliance. In desperation, Li Lejun disguised herself as a palace eunuch/servant and attempted to sneak out of the palace gates. She was intercepted by imperial guards. The Empress Dowager condemned her actions as willful insubordination, an attempt to sabotage peace talks, and treasonous endangerment of Daye's national security. This is the reason of the punishment.

Prince Qi drops to his knees, frantically begging the Dowager to spare Lejun. He falsely claims full responsibility, insisting he planned her escape and that he alone should be paddled.

Li Lejun desperately counters, pleading with the Dowager that her brother is innocent and that she should bear the consequences alone.

Coldly mocking their devotion ("What a touching display of sibling love! Then I shall grant your wish!"), the Empress Dowager sentences Prince Qi to 30 cane strokes for poor supervision, but orders Lejun to endure every blow in his place.

2. Guard M/M Prince Qi, hitting with a long paddle, position of lying on a bench. Two male guards hold him. The shot is very brief. Only a single paddle hit is visible.

When the Empress Dowager issued the decree, the sentence was legally handed down to Prince Qi: "Prince Qi failed in supervision: 30 strikes of the paddle!" At Lejun's earnest plea, she ordered that Lejun receive the punishment in his place. Visually, the drama briefly realizes the sentence upon its original target.

While Lejun physically absorbed the wood on her posterior, Prince Qi absorbed every blow mentally. Being forced to stand by helplessly while his fragile sister was beaten for his "crime" felt to him like an execution of his own dignity.

In the editing sequence, this stroke is placed directly after the Empress Dowager's voiceover ("Everything you have was given by us, and we can strip it away at will!") and immediately before Prince Qi’s decisive transformation.

This visual memory of the paddle striking him down is the ultimate catalyst for his descent into ruthlessness. The instant this flash ends, Prince Qi declares with burning conviction:

"I must possess power! Never again will I stand empty-handed, threatened, and at the mercy of others!"

The paddle represents the brutal reality of absolute imperial authority crushing the powerless. Experiencing that blow—both literally in his guilt and symbolically on the bench—is what kills the gentle prince and births a cold, calculating monarch.
