König der Diebe aka King of Thieves

The children's total take for the day is below the set limit. Not even two grand… All under the limit. Caruso blames Marcel, because as the "champion" he is responsible, and because he has betrayed his trust. The boys have been stashing part of the loot for themselves, hiding it in their shoes, which comes to light during the inspection.

The protagonist is Barbu, a ten-year-old Ukrainian boy living in a poor, remote settlement. Caruso, a former circus performer bringing a whiff of the vast, distant world, arrives in the settlement, buys the boy from his parents, and promises him a successful circus career. At his insistence, he also buys his older sister, Mimma, and smuggles both children into Berlin. There, however, he secretly hands the girl over to a brothel and initiates Barbu into the secrets of theft and thievery. A peculiar bond develops between the man and the boy. At first, Barbu admires Caruso and trusts him blindly. In turn, the former circus man sees the dark-eyed boy as the son he never had, and introduces him to his partner, Júlia, who was deeply scarred by an old accident under the big top.
