Thương nhớ ở ai, Whom Do You Miss?, Episode 2.

 It is from the TV Series called Thương nhớ ở ai, Whom Do You Miss?, Episode 2. (Vietnam 2017) The husband – an older villager named Mr. Bánh M/F his wife Mrs. Bánh, one hit with a wooden plank on her butt, position of standing, in the presence of their daughters and some other people. There is also a hint of a spanking with the wife in a bent-over position (my favorite position), but the husband ultimately changes his mind about a ritual spanking. I am delighted that this scene was discovered, even though it's only a hint of a spanking, as such a position is extremely rare for disciplinary spanking in Vietnam.

The punishment stems from deep-rooted patriarchal frustration and anger over the fact that the wife has borne him only daughters and no sons. In traditional Vietnamese feudal society, failing to produce a male heir was considered a major disgrace and the sole fault of the wife. Daughters were derisively called wild ducks – viewed as burdens who merely consume family food before flying away to another household upon marriage.

The soldier Vạn is walking along the village path with young Hạnh, teaching her to march. Suddenly, a terrified woman (Mrs. Bánh) runs past them, desperately fleeing from her enraged husband, who is chasing her wielding a wooden plank.

The wife tries to take cover, begging for mercy. However, Mr. Bánh catches up with her and delivers a hard strike with the wooden board across her buttocks.

The woman screams and scrambles away. As the husband pursues her to strike again, the soldier Vạn intervenes, grabs the wooden plank and pushes the husband to the ground. Vạn confronts him demanding who gave him the right to beat his wife. The husband argues back: "I am disciplining my wife, what business is it of yours?!"

At this point, a very rare and paradoxical moment occurs. Instead of thanking her rescuer, the beaten wife instantly defends her husband and snaps at Vạn: "Why are you hitting my husband?!" She then retrieves the wooden plank, hands it back to her husband, and submissively bends forward with her hands placed on her knees, intentionally offering her bottom to her husband so he can finish spanking her.

His young daughters obediently recites a self-deprecating traditional rhyme on their father's cue: "We are a flock of wild ducks; when small we are just useless mouths to feed, when grown up we fly away...
