His mom is a serial con artist and thief on the run from the authorities, who travels under various false aliases (Natasha, Irina, Sofya, etc.).

The reason for the spanking is Kesha’s open rebellion against their criminal lifestyle. In the previous scene at a young man named Pasha's apartment, Kesha pleaded with his mother not to steal because Pasha is kind. When she ignored him, Kesha alerted the neighbors by claiming his mother had collapsed, completely derailing her theft and blowing her cover.

Kesha is tired of living on the run and rejects the toys and clothes bought with stolen money, shouting that he doesn't want or need any of it.

The mother is under immense psychological pressure (the security services are closing in on her). She cannot handle her son resisting her authority or forming emotional attachments to the strangers they meet (such as the kind WWII veteran "grandpa" Fyodor Stepanovich and "uncle" Vitya). She is desperate to keep Kesha locked in their codependent, isolated bubble. She says something along the lines of: "It's just you and me against the whole world".

Frustrated by everything happening around him, as soon as his mother leaves the room, Kesha packs up his few belongings, runs away from the hotel, and boards a train to Vyshny Volochyok to find the "grandpa" Fyodor.
