The boy has ambitions of becoming a soldier, and they have a long march ahead of them tomorrow. However, the kid is staying up late, and the man tells him he's a night owl. With the playful swat, he sends him off to bed.

2. Virtanen, the commandant of the prisoner-of-war camp, and one of the offending boys Mm/m another offending boy, thrashing with a birch, position of lying on a wooden bench, in front of other captives and some of the camp staff. Virtanen first deals him a solid blow, but then hands the bundle of birch rods to one of the guilty boy, ordering him to beat his accomplice. The boy hesitates at first, but when Virtanen threatens to whip them both with the birch, he submits and begins to strike him. Initially, he hits him weakly, which angers Virtanen. But moments later, under Virtanen's pressure, he starts striking him hard.

The two imprisoned boys left the camp without permission, but someone saw them and reported them. It was classified as a violation of the camp rules, which was the cause of the corporal punishment.

This film sheds light on a lesser-known chapter of World War II: the Finnish occupation of Soviet Karelia. While the war brought immense hardship to everyone, it was the children who suffered the most. The entire narrative is built upon their actual memories and firsthand accounts.

The Finns felt wronged because the Soviets had essentially stolen their historical territory. This land had belonged to them for a long time and was mostly inhabited by the Karelians—a people closely related to the Finns, whose language is so similar to Finnish that they can understand each other without any problems.
