The story centers on Erik, a young boy struggling to survive in a crowded, impoverished household, and his father, Albin, a man hardened by unemployment and the crushing weight of their social standing. 

The problem arises from a desperate act: to secure money for his family’s survival, Erik's friend pawned his late grandpa's watch and he convinced Erik to pretend to be a blind beggar and try to beg for the money needed to get the watch back. When Albin discovers this, it triggers a severe disciplinary response. The father, burdened by his own feelings of helplessness and failure, enforces his authority through physical punishment, stern warning Erik: "First, you get fed; then, you get a spanking."
