In the film, their relationship is not a love affair in the traditional sense. It is a bond formed on the basis of trauma. Walter is not her lover; he is her manipulator, exploiting her vulnerability, low self-esteem, and drug addiction. Lily submits to this role because it is easier for her than facing the reality of her broken life, but the price for this 'comfort' is the loss of her own freedom and identity.
