Fighting Back
Those are from the movie called Fighting Back (Australia 1982) 1. In the staff room, a seasoned colleague suggests to the new teacher that he get a strap for corporal punishment. The older teacher calls the strap 'the persuader'.
2. The deputy principal, Mr. Payne M/m Tom, hint of strapping on his bum, position of standing with folded arms, in the teacher's study, no actually spanking.
At the start of the corporal punishment, it looks like the teacher has changed his mind and is going to spank him with the strap after all. However, the punishment quickly shifts to the loathed strapping on the hands. That's why we say there is only a hint of a spanking on the bottom.
The strapping is a punishment for defiant behavior, talking back, truancy, and a complete lack of respect for authority. Tom reacts aggressively to the commands of the veteran educator, refuses to submit to school discipline, and resists both verbally and physically. Payne views this as a total breakdown of discipline, which he is accustomed to dealing with through immediate corporal punishment at this school.
3. The deputy principal, Mr. Payne, delivers the strap to the new teacher to help him tame Tom, who is raging in the room he was brought to. Ultimately, the young teacher chooses not to use the strap.
4. ?/m, striking with an uknown tool, unknown position, in a teacher's study. Only the sounds of the blows hitting can be heard, likely from the strap again.
Tom and two other offending boys are waiting outside the teacher's office for corporal punishment. This punishment is being administered by one of the teachers, but we don't know who is giving it, nor do we know who is receiving the beating, and unfortunately, the reason for the punishment remains unknown.
5. The new young teacher asks the mother to send a letter to the school expressing her opposition to the use of corporal punishment on her son, Tom. He explains that if she sends such a letter, no teacher will be able to beat Tom without risking prosecution for common assault. However, the mother refuses, stating that she cannot interfere with what the teachers deem best, and notes that John is still a very young teacher.
6. The deputy principal, Mr. Payne asks the new young teacher where he keeps his strap which he gave him earlier. The new teacher tells him he's burnt it and the reply is "that's 6 dollars you owe me".
The new young teacher is an opponent of corporal punishment. Tom, however, is a highly troubled student who has even physically assaulted his own mother.
