Only the beginning of the corporal punishment is shown. The rest continues off-screen, with sounds of caning being heard.
David begs him, “Please sir, please, sir, don’t beat me,” but the punishment is carried out anyway. David is beaten for failing to recite his lesson properly, being nervous, making mistakes, and especially for talking back to his stepfather.
