Tom Brown's Schooldays, Episode 4.

 That is from the BBC TV Mini Series called Tom Brown's Schooldays, Episode 4. (United Kingdom 1973) Dr. Thomas Arnold, the headmaster of Rugby School M/m teen Tom Brown, thrashing with a cane on his buttocks, position of bent across Brooke’s back, in front of his fellows in a schoolhouse. Brooke is the older boy, the schoolhouse captain. Arnold announces that Tom will be caned in front of the other boys in the schoolhouse sparing him the greater humiliation of a public flogging in front of the whole school. Before the caning, Brooke handed Tom Brown a piece of cloth to put in his mouth. 

Tom is punished for fabricated poaching  on the land of Sir Reginald Harcourt and for allegedly lying about it.

The entire incident is a deliberate frame-up orchestrated by the main school bully Flashman and his gang. 

Flashman’s follower, Cuthbertson, sends a small boy to Tom with a false message that his best friend Ned East has been badly injured after falling from a tree in the nearby copse.

Worried about his friend, Tom rushes to the cottage of the gamekeeper Redman (nicknamed “Velveteens”).

There, Redman gives Tom two partridges in a game bag and lends him a shotgun to try.

Outside, Tom is immediately confronted by Sir Reginald Harcourt and his men, who accuse him of poaching on private land.

Tom is taken before Dr. Arnold. Although he insists he was tricked, he has no proof and no witness. Three adults (Redman, Sir Reginald, and another) testify against him.

Dr. Arnold does not believe Tom’s story. He considers the offense serious enough to damage the school’s reputation.

This is Flashman’s revenge for previous conflicts with Tom (particularly Tom’s refusal to sell or share his winning lottery ticket on the horse “Patron” and his resistance during an earlier bullying incident).
