The Testament of Ann Lee

 The scenes are from the film called The Testament of Ann Lee (United Kingdom, USA 2025) 1. Dad John Lee M/f Ann Lee, thrashing with a switch on her backside, position of leaning by her hands on the table, in the presence of other family members. 

The reason of the corporal punishment is that Ann confronts her parents about their intimate life, stating, "I know what you do to her." 

In a 18th-century working-class household, such a comment from a child was seen as extreme insolence and a sign of being possessed by unnatural thoughts. Her father punishes her with a switch in front of the family to suppress her burgeoning religious fanaticism and to re-establish patriarchal order.

The motive behind this scene is identical to the previous sequence. The husband strikes her bare bottom with a short birch, feigning that it is for religious purification and spiritual exaltation. In reality, his true goal is to coerce her into having sex with him.

The Shakers are viewed as a threat to society because of their pacifism and their rejection of traditional marriage (The Shaker movement is an informal name for Ann’s religious movement).
