Rear

Ricky cussed at the teacher. More precisely: Mr. Hudson was picking on and teasing him in front of the whole class, everyone was laughing, and Ricky’s friend Johnny told him he had to say something back. Ricky did it (probably swore or talked back). Then Mr. Hudson punished him and his friend with the paddle. 

His mom had previously given consent (opted into corporal punishment) when Mr. Hudson called her at work. This is standard procedure at the school — parents must give written permission for the school to use paddling as discipline.

When he is going to sit down for his homework, the soreness of his bottom is immediate, and he doesn't hide his discomfort. As the son Ricky gets out of the shower, his mama notices the bruises on his bum from the strokes. Later, a Department of Child Services investigator comes and documents all the circumstances of the case. The investigation of the case, which included photos of the bruises on his bottom, did not prove abuse. According to the investigator, the case was closed as a justified corporal punishment administered with reasonable force.

The new white principal calls a meeting with the Black parents. Ricky's mother, Loretta, is expected to support her proposal to ban paddling at the school. However, the meeting backfires when the parents defend the use of the paddle, refusing to change the policy. They argue strongly in favor of corporal punishment. 

Once again, there's this strange reaction from his mother. She initially consented to the physical punishment, but then went to the school to complain that the teacher had given him such a paddling that his bottom was bruised. What exactly did she expect after being struck with a paddle? That his posterior would still look like a mannequin's in a department store window?
