The incident took place back in October 2018. Tanya, a mother from Ellenbrook in Perth, Western Australia, struck her 9-year-old daughter once on the bottom with a wooden kitchen spoon. The daughter has ADHD and behavioral issues, which the mother described as something that makes parenting increasingly difficult over time.
The girl had taken and eaten an old hamburger patty from a fridge specifically reserved for the family dogs. This meat contained deworming tablets (anti-parasite medication for pets) that are unsafe for humans and could potentially cause poisoning.
The mother panicked, fearing her daughter could become seriously ill or even be poisoned. She had previously warned the girl not to touch that meat, and in a moment of stress and frustration after being disobeyed, she struck her once on the bum with the wooden spoon.
She pleaded guilty at the Perth Magistrates Court on July 3, 2019. The judge described it as a one-off incident and a moment of frustration. The mother received a $750 spent conviction order (conditional fine), meaning she did not have to pay it as long as she did not reoffend. While the incident is recorded, a 'spent conviction' is effectively erased after a period of time and does not result in a permanent criminal record.
The mother was deeply hurt and shocked by the legal process. She said she hasn't been the same since and feels ashamed. However, she defended her actions, stating she would likely do it again in the same situation because it was about protecting her child's health during a crisis.
Legal context in Western Australia at the time: Parents are allowed to use reasonable physical punishment at home (it is not entirely prohibited as it is in schools or childcare facilities). However, if the punishment causes an injury—such as a bruise, swelling, or a lasting mark—it is classified as assault.
My personal note on this case. This case clearly shows what a circus liberal lunatics can create over one deserved smack with a wooden spoon on the butt, after which the daughter was left with a bruise on her backside. In my younger days in my country, no one made a fuss over welts or bruises on the buttocks after a disciplinary spanking. Pediatricians, kindergarten teachers, and school teachers didn’t report it to anyone, because these kinds of punishments were taken as something common. It was normal for children to have to obey their parents and all adults responsible for them. Bruises and welts on the bottom back then? Nobody cared. They were seen as a normal part of physical punishment.
So I genuinely feel sorry for that loving mom with common sense and everything she had to endure from the intervention of these liberal nutjobs—at the police and in court. Jan, what's the most actual case you know of of a girl being spanked at a very late age? I'm from Russia, and here, too, it used to be uncommon to be harsh with those who disobeyed or misbehaved. But unfortunately, that's gradually faded away.
ReplyDeleteA lawyer colleague at my work told me that her grandfather spanked her with a belt at 16 years old after she got blind drunk with friends and they literally carried her home. He even didn't wait for her to sober up and gave her impudent, drunken, shameless ass the belting of her life so severely that the next time she tried alcohol was after she got married at 25. Now that's what I call effective memorable upbringing.

ReplyDeleteUnd die Wissenschaft und die Mehrzahl der Betroffenen legen eindeutig nahe, dass die Prügelstrafe wenig nachhaltig ist und die das Risiko eines Schadens sehr wohl hoch ist (was auch immer „Schaden“ hier bedeutet).
Aber die absolut expertenfeindliche und letztendlich bildungsferne Verharmlosung der realen Prügelstrafe für Kinder lässt mich das Ganze hier doch mit anderen Augen sehen – si tacuisses …
