Never the Twain Shall Meet

That is from the old movie called Never the Twain Shall Meet (USA 1931) Daniel Pritchard M/F Tamea, three whacks with a stick, position of lying on the floor, partially off-screen. The impacts of the stick are not visible. Before the hitting, Tamea tells him: " Whip me, but don't hate me" and a bit later: "Whip me or you will hate me."

The scene occurs at a point where Daniel Pritchard has completely abandoned his former life in San Francisco to live with Tamea on her island. However, the paradise has turned into a nightmare for him. Daniel has become a broken man, struggling with alcoholism and the loss of his civilized identity, while Tamea remains a creature of pure impulse and passion.

The whacking is a climactic expression of Daniel's frustration and his attempt to exert authority. He punishes her because she is uncontrollable. In the logic of the film's era, this physical act is portrayed as the only way to tame her spirit and re-establish a sense of order in their chaotic, deteriorating relationship.

At the beginning of the clip, when Tamea first arrived at Daniel's house in San Francisco, she showed her innate view of discipline. She remarked:  "If my maids looked at me the way your housekeeper does, I would have them whipped." - English language and subtitles https://ok.ru/video/12455638600379 and https://vkvideo.ru/video-229942838_456239691?list=ln-WdOFz4gkVt61ls7L3x
