Nanny, Season 1., Episode 1. Innocent Party
This is from the TV Series called Nanny, Season 1., Episode 1. Innocent Party (United Kingdom 1981) Daddy M/m son, hitting with his hand or an unknown implement, off-screen. They are just heard the sounds of the punishment. Behind the door, the nanny Barbara Gray and the maid Mabel hear it. While the maid favors physical punishment, the nanny opposes it.
Robin (a boy about 4 years old) made a mess in his bed — he wet the bed (done number one all over it). This happened at night when he was supposed to be asleep. Instead, he quietly sneaked downstairs, made the mess, and then ran down to his parents during dinner, causing a scene (shouting “Mum!”). The parents (especially the mother) considered this unacceptable behaviour and an interruption of their social life.
The father (Sir Anthony, a Member of Parliament) went to Robin’s room in the morning with the intention of beating him (beat some of that sin out of him, as Mabel says, and she is looking forward to it). Mabel (the kitchen helper, an old-fashioned type) is delighted because she believes children are “instruments of the devil” and you have to squeeze the sin out of them by beating them.
The mother (Lady Cheddon) approves of it — she says her husband does all the beating and that she herself was beaten as a child (e.g., with a skipping rope and her husband with a cane) and it never did us any harm.
The episode strongly contrasts old-fashioned and modern approaches to child-rearing in 1930s Britain (the story is set in 1932). English language and subtitles https://ok.ru/video/10389306280635 and https://vkvideo.ru/video-229942838_456239566?list=ln-8ZuD5ihtEQ8zwOuLIo
